Social Skills Training for Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Other Social Challenges

We offer intense specialized social skills training for adolescents and young adults, particularly those on the Autism Spectrum or those facing social anxiety. These sessions are designed to improve communication, build meaningful relationships, and enhance social competence in various settings, from school to work environments. Through group sessions, we provide practical tools and strategies to help navigate social situations with confidence.   

These sessions may last up to 2 hours per day, depending on the level of intensity required.

Offering 16-week sessions twice a week. 

  

Sample Session Outline/Overview

Need: Express to the members listening is our cue to all that goes on around us. ​

Introduction: Listening: - In a small group, tell each other about their day. One student will call on another student to paraphrase what he or she said. ​

Identify the Skill Components ​

 1. Listening ​

 2. Following instructions ​

 3. Paying attention ​

 4. Ignoring distractions ​

 5. Think about what you heard. ​

 6. Repeat the information to yourself. ​

​

Model the Skill: The group leader teaches the members how to listen. to each other by using skills 1-6.  

  

Description of the group: Social Skills/Coping and Acceptance 

  

This group will support individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder by helping them develop social skills and ways to communicate with others respectfully. 

•This group will also support clients in coping with different experiences that come with social situations and acceptance of themselves. Moreover, this group will encourage and motivate group members to read social cues, regulating behavior and responses in different situations. 

  

Why is this group needed? 

▪This group will be reaching an underserved population of high school students who identify as Autistic or with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder  (DSM-5 299.00 (F84.0) who have low support needs but still benefit from some supports and accommodations.

▪This group will help autistic clients/ clients with autism learn strategies in social skills and receive support in social areas, sensory areas, and acceptance. In addition, this social skills and coping skills group encourages practice of important life skills such as making friends, succeeding in school and later in life, getting and keeping a job.

Goals and Objectives of the Group 

  

Improve and learn listening skills, maintaining friendships, learning controlled behavior skills, learn about social cues and strategies for social cues, learn and use strategies to cope with social anxiety, practice self-advocacy in communication support, meet their sensory needs in a healthy way, learning about stimming and Autism acceptance. 

Screening Plan 

Perspective group members will sign up for a short screening session with a group leader. Their level of support that they need will be assessed and their goals. Individuals must be in grades 9-12 and must have an average to above average IQ and the primary mode of communication needs to be verbal or speaking. Students who are non-verbal will be excluded from this group because another group with adaptive materials and sessions may be beneficial.
